The Davalois Fearon Dance Master Class features Fearon’s ballet-infused postmodern/Caribbean technique. It begins with a warmup that draws onher Master 's-level dance scholarship, 12 years of experience as the founder and artistic director of an interdisciplinary collaborative dance company, and as a featured dancer/educator with the Stephen Petronio Company. It begins with a warmup that draws on her training in ballet, West African, somatic practices, Hip Hop, Cunningham, Dunham, Graham, Horton, Limon, improvisation, Contract improvisation, and Dancehall. This is followed by an across-the-floor phrase that focuses on integrating the movement ideas presented in the warm-up. The class culminates with a center-floor phrase from the Davalois Fearon Dance repertory that encourages dancers to express their own unique movement style while applying the principles introduced in the warmup and across-the-floor phrases. Fearon’s class will help dancers become more versatile movers by emphasizing how to clearly articulate movements initiated from the joints and embody rhythmically dynamic shifts of energy, in order to achieve the signature DFD movement sensibility. This fluid yet assertive approach has been described as “both gymnastic and natural” (Mary Cargill, DanceViewTimes blog). Basic professional dance training is highly recommended.
